Stock Photo Sunday – when the model is me in Iceland!

The majority of my 40+ years as a photographer has been behind the camera lens with rare photos of me as as an actual participant even during family events. Due to painful complications from successful cancer surgery in 2016, my previously active life has encountered some serious challenges forcing me to adjust how photography fits into my new phase of life.

Over the years, I’ve dabbled in contributing to various photo stock agencies like Alamy with modest success and only a handful of sales. My youngest son and former travel companion (he has a serious girlfriend now lol) was always happy to indulge me in “posing” during our trips. Two of the pictures I took and submitted of him were accepted as stock images. Getting a model release from my son vs a stranger seemed like a no brainer and he’s quite photogenic.

My next, very recent, ah ha moment was to begin submitting photos of someone else I know, me!! So far I’ve submitted four and all were accepted.  I’m pumped!

This newest one of me was taken during a birthday trip to Iceland in January. I updated it by adding a fun comic art filter to give it a bit more pop and sent it to my stock agency with my fingers crossed that they’d accept it. They did! “African American Woman Comic Art” is now part of my Alamy portfolio.

Next steps; manifesting some appropriate sales of my stock images and submitting more selfie images and those of my family members.

Stock Photo Sunday – when the model is me – Westman Island, Iceland!

Travel Tuesday – 2016 Winter Trip to Iceland

I had always wanted to visit Iceland, especially with a direct flight from Boston. I decided to make that happen for my brother’s 50th January 26th birthday and as a belated January 19th birthday gift to myself. Boston folks were incredulous that we’d want to travel to Iceland rather than a warm tropical island. Thankfully, we’re a bit unconventional so I took advantage of a very inexpensive, 5 day Iceland Air package including: airfare, hotel, breakfast and travel voucher package deal and we jetted off to Reykjavik, Iceland.

10 minutes after landing, I had my brother take a photo of me in front of the Welcome to Iceland sign, we then headed to the included transport to our downtown Reykjavik hotel, located about 35 minutes from Keflavik, airport.

Day three, I decided to buy Golden Circle Tour tickets so we could visit the snowy South Iceland countryside, see the famous geysers, Gullfoss falls and all the tour had to offer. The eight hour tour was a fantastic decision. Our guide was knowledgeable, a good driver and she was very friendly.

Let me say that it was such an exciting trips, my youngest son and I went on a 6 day Great Value Vacation tour for his 21st, August 2017 birthday.

Due to medical challenges, traveling direct with no layovers with almost everything included is a major win win for me.

Iceland – Throw Back Thursday Photo Collage

I loved both my winter and summer trips to Iceland. I can picture myself living there for a month or so just traveling and taking photos. My goal is to finally capture a stunning photo of the Northern Lights 🙂

In the meantime, my son and I had a super great 6 day escorted vacation, last August for his 21st birthday trip. The weather was absolutely perfect. Our tour guide said our group had the best weather he’d seen in a while. Yes!

This month features #tbt gift products of summer landscape photos taken in Iceland in August. I couldn’t pick just one favorite and that’s why I get excited about photo collages.

Reynisfjara, Iceland Black Sand Beach Triptych

Last year’s six night, August escorted tour of Iceland was just what the doctor ordered. All the work was done for us, yes!  All we had to do was show up on time to board the tour bus. One of our fabulous stops was in South Iceland to Reynisfjara. My 21 year old son and I stood in awe at the magnificent basalt rock columns on our far left which he had to climb and our first black sand beach on the left  that is featured in the 3 panel acrylic print above, my first.
The original image was artistically tweaked into this dramatic wall art suitable for home, office or hotel room! Contact me below if you’d like me to modify the Iceland font and or to the text.

Saturday Scenic Summer Images of Iceland

I had my first taste of visiting Iceland by celebrating my birthday in January 2016 where is was a magnificent landscape of white and ice.

Stunning Icelandic summer scenery

Since then I had my eyes on summer vacation package sales to celebrate my youngest child’s 21st August birthday. I chose an escorted travel vacation so my son could explore with members of the group, as I’m still not doing as well as I had hoped after my September 2016 surgery. That said, we HAD A FANTASTIC TIME! The weather co-operated with all six days of either sun or clouds but no rain and the group of 22 all got along well.

It was magical being able to check off all of my wish list items including:

  • beautiful black sand beaches
  • miles of lava fields
  • colorful puffins
  • multi-color glaciers
  • green fields and river ways
  • wonderful waterfalls
  • and even the Northern Lights

For me, an escorted tour is the way to go, leaving all the planning and traveling to the tour guide and the bus driver.  Now to go through over 800 images and several videos,  sorting by date, location and subject. Fun, fun fun. 🙂

Travel Tuesday: Icelandic photo collage

It’s been a very long time since I’ve been enamored of a country and for whatever reason, my quick, 4 day visit to Iceland remains very vivid in my mind.
I can’t seem to stop talking and writing about my winter trip to Reykjavik. Almost every single person we met was friendly and helpful. Only two, a salesperson at a jewelry store in the city and a flight attendant at the airport on our last day made it a 98% successful adventure. One day, I’ll set up another travel discount package alert and plan a return visit during the summer for a comparison.

Travel Tuesday: International gold charm collection

New Iceland gold braclet charm
I love collecting gold, international bracelet charms!

Collecting gold bracelet charms as travel mementos is a passion of mine! I’ve learned to research, find and contact jewelry stores before I even leave my house.
I’m ecstatic to have added my new Reykjavik, Iceland to my almost completely full bracelet. I was hoping it would have Iceland written on it however I believe Iceland is island in Icelandic.

Travel Tuesday: Winter landscape, Suðurland, Iceland

Celebrating my 61st, birthday in Iceland was puzzling to most of my Boston friends. They figured anyone living in New England would head to a tropical climate. This year I amazed myself by stepping outside my predicable Capricorn comfort zone by adapting a little bit of my wild and adventurous Aquarius side.

I’ve had the hardest time describing Iceland’s constantly changing winter weather which is why I love photography. However, I really need to wrap my brain around the appropriate words so folks can Google and find my work like this stunning sun peeking through winter clouds Icelandic greeting card. lol.

I added an interesting bit of an abstract overlay to spice it up just a tad.
